It is the roots of the epiphytic orchid which holds it to the ranking or swing without which the orchid may expire. These exposed roots will absorb from the atmosphere the needed wetness for survival; an orchid which is anchored to a hierarchy may also absorb nourishment from the bird compost or moulds on the bark of the tree.
