Can rose bushes be successfully transplanted during summer when in full bloom?

I need to do some changes to my house that would require moving the roses.

Well you can, but they’re not going to be too happy about it! Some might even fail, but here’s how to go about it if you have to:

You’re going to have to cut all the growth way back, at least by half; the disturbed roots will not be able to support all the growth it currently has.

Soak the root area well, maybe use some Vitamin B1 transplant starter, or “Superthrive” root stimulator.

Dig out as much of a root ball as you can, then immediately plant into it’s new spot or into a container big enough to contain the roots. After you plant them, water your roses in again with the B1/ Superthrive solution. Water every day at first, then as they start getting a little established every other day, and so on. Weekly applications of the B1/Superthrive solution for the first month might help too.

It would also probably be a good idea to provide extra shade for them in the first few weeks. Use shade cloth or simply drag a deck chair to shade them from the hot western sun.

I’ve done this by necessity in the summer before and had success. Just keep an eye on them and give them extra love and care when needed!
