Caring for Rose Bushes
Rose bush care is as simple as following some basic ideas. All roses need a few things to stay healthy and strong, be they bushes, trees, or climbers. All roses need sunlight, water, and nutrients. They also need to be kept safe from pests, and to be pruned. So let’s go over those basics here.
Sunlight is the main ingredients for a healthy rose bush. 6-10 hours of sun is best. The light should be direct and unfiltered. So choose a nice sunny spot. You should also keep your rose bushes well away from other large trees and plants. The root systems of these big guys can go well beyond where you think they may end. That means that your roses will be robbed of important nutrients and water.
Water is another big issue for roses. They are very thirsty plants. Watering should never be done midday, as this can cause your plants to burn if water is on the leaves, and also to heat up quite a bit. Your best bet is to water fist thing in the morning, or after sunset. You should also water from the base only, and not over the top of the plant. I like to just set my hose at the base of the plant and let it run for a bit. If you have an irrigation system, be sure to set the timer for very early in the day, or later in the evening.
Fertilization is another point you must attend to. Roses can be very hungry, and need a consistent effort to stay well nourished. Begin by adding bone meal to the soil in the spring, and by fertilizing every three weeks after that. Again, fertilize at the base of the plant only. Fertilizer applied directly to the leaves can injure your plant.
Pruning is another essential for rose bush care. You’ll want to deadhead faded or wilted blooms as they occur, and also remove any dying or weak stems. This helps your roses to send their energy to the healthy parts of the plant.
Pests should be watched for, and dealt with quickly. Remove any pests you can see, and treat for them if necessary. Treatment, even if it’s organic, should be done carefully and according to the manufacturer’s directions.
Caring for your roses is not really complex, but you should just be aware of these basic steps to ensure their good health, and bright, colorful blooms.
