Growing orchids from seed?

Can you grow orchids from seed?

You can grow orchids from seed but it is extremely difficult.

Orchid seeds are extremely small, almost looking like dust. People who raise them from seed generally do so in sterilized closed flasks, and they take years to grow to a mature size and bloom.

There are two types of orchids, “sympodial” and “monopodial” orchids. Sympodial orchids tend to grown new bulbs from the base of older bulbs and form a rrhizome that grows horizontally. You can produce new plants by cutting the rhizome into sections with at least 3 bulbs on each section. Each section will continue to grow as a separate plant.

Monopodial (one foot) orchids grown in one vertical section. They can generate new baby plants (called keikis – Hawaiian for baby) only an old flower spike. But this is unreliable. They will occasionally generate a new plant form the base. I have had no luck with either approach. The only alternative way then is to grow from seed. Unfortunately, the phalaenopsis (moth) orchid that is probably the most commonly known, is a monopodial orchid.

I suggest that you visit one of the many web sites on orchid culture. You can also often find some pretty good books in the gardening section of any book store. Orchids can be a challenge to grow and get to bloom (most people love them to death – literally). But orchids come from every continent except Antarctica. They are found from the tropics to Alaska. So no matter where you live, you can find a pretty good variety of orchids that will do well in your climate. I have over 100 plants from probably 70 different types of orchids. I live in Southern California and about half of the plants stay outdoors year round. A few can take and need full sun, others shade. The rest of the plants stay indoors, at least in the winter. I do not have a greenhouse, and some of them might do better with higher humidity. But year round there is always something in bloom. A good book, and a little trial and error (and I have had my share of errors) will help you make the right conditions for each plant. It can be a challenge, but it is rewarding – AND addicting !
