Which is fertilizer is best for paphiopedilum and phalaenopsis orchids to get them to bloom again?
I have 20-10-20, but have been recommended 20-10-10, which I’m having trouble finding.
Fertilize paphiopedilum often with a high nitrogen fertilizer like Wonderlizer 25-9-9. The best way to fertilize is “weekly, weakly”, meaning water with fertilizer 3 out of 4 times, but each of those times dilute, the fertilizer accordingly.
Phals are “heavy” feeders, particularly when in full growth. During the Spring through early Fall, fertilizing every seven days, with several clear waterings in between, will make your Phal plants very happy. In the late Fall through Winter, a light feeding once a month will suffice.
The fertilizer formula should match the potting medium. We recommend non-urea based fertilizers at half strength. Non urea fertilizers provide 100% immediately available nitrogen, which urea based fertilizers do not. We recommend Grow More fertilizers , which also have micro nutrients, to provide strength for the new growth, as well as support for the flowers. At half strength Grow More provide four times more bang for the dollar. Use 20-10-20 with coconut chips, tree fern, charcoal, or various inorganic aggregates, but use 30-10-10 with fir bark, as the microbes destroying your bark need more N in their diet.
The peat based combinations, such as ProMix®, often have supplemental fertilizer, so somewhat less fertilizer should be used with this medium. Whichever formula is selected, we recommend half strength at each application. As with most Orchids, Phalaenopsis roots are sensitive to fertilizer salt build up. Phalaenopsis are particularly fond of organic fertilizers, such as fish emulsion and manure teas.
