phalaenopsis orchid??????
So,I just got a new plant, not knowing it was a type of orchid, that has side shoots kind of like an Aloe Vera Would Have. Can I Break These Off And Start New Plants?
It’s rare to buy a Phalaenopsis with side shoots (which are called (kieki)es – which I think is Hawaiian for babies). The nurseries/greenhouses remove them before shipping out the plants to be ‘grown-on’ at their facility. Otherwise they would be selling two plants for the price of one.
But phalaenopsis often do send out baby plants on the nodes of old flower spikes and at the base of the plant.
Do not remove the keiki before it has three or four good size leaves (say 2 or more inches long) and has developed it’s own root system (3 – 5 roots). It can then be carefully removed and planted in it’s own pot with proper potting medium and you will have an identical plant to that of it’s ‘mother’ which will flower anywhere from 18 – 24 months after it has been planted on it’s own.
You must have a very healthy phal and must be taking good care of it.
Good luck.
If what you have are aerial roots – do not remove them and do not push them into the planting medium. Aerial roots have a different make-up than roots growing in the potting medium and are designed to absorb moisture from the air. If you push them into the potting medium they will rot.
