Phalenopsis orchid…?
One of the two leaves is turning red, what should I do. Also the stalk has not grown for a year but it has been growing many roots.
The leaves turn red to protect themselves from excess sun. It is not too harmful but they do prefer shade. They live in slightly darker tropical rainforests (the canopy provides shade for them). Move the orchid to an East window or further away from the window it is at now. While it is not necessarily harmful it can slow flowering when this red pigment comes up. If it carries on it can eventually burn the leaves
If it has stopped flowering a year ago, I would cut the stalk off at the base. When the orchid is ready it will send out a new flower spike (the stalk) and there will be a new set of blooms for you.
If it has recently flowered, it’s possible to extend the blooms by cutting just above a “node” (bump) on the stem when the flowers start to drop. This will cause it send out a side shoot with a new set of flowers. However, in my experience it seems this is only really effective if it has recently bloomed, not if it was a long time ago.
Root growth is a good sign. Remember to re-pot every 2 years but never over-pot the orchid. Don’t repot when it is flowering or they are likely to drop off.
Feed the orchid with a weak fertiliser too, to encourage growth. Give it a specially formulated orchid feed because normal houseplant fertiliser is too high in nitrogen. While this promotes healthy leaf and root growth it will tend to make the orchid focus on this instead of flowering. Orchid food will contain nitrogen but just in the best proportions with phosphorus and potassium.
