Orchids have indeed marveled and fascinated many people of diverse cultures. Their versatility enables it to grow in many environments from the arctic to equatorial tropics and anywhere else in between. This adaptability to flourish in a variety of conditions has attracted many people to grow and cultivate orchids.
At present, there are known 880 varieties, 28,000 species, with an excess of about 200,000 hybrids. Explorations are still underway to discover unknown kinds which may be found in deep wild forests and undergrounds.
Growing orchids at home
Orchids are simple to grow at home. Although most varieties bloom only once a year, it is important to provide them under optimal home conditions to enable them to blossom frequently. A good backyard can also be a perfect growing place especially if there are trees around to provide shading and protection.
For starters, it is suggested that they visit local orchid nurseries and ask advice from professional growers. They can be able to point you some tips regarding which variety of orchid can best grow at home and ways on how to take care of them.
Orchid care tips
According to experts, there are three important factors to be considered when growing orchids at home. They are plant positioning, temperature and humidity and watering.
Positioning
Orchids grow best on elevated places. It suggested that they be lifted on positions where good levels of light and air can pass. Direct sunlight should be avoided because it can scorch petals and leaves and strong winds can break delicate parts of the plant. If leaves turn reddish, it can be a sign of too much light exposure. Placing them near trees can provide natural shading.
Improvised dark nets can also be set up above and surrounding the plants as protection from changes in weather, visiting birds and pests, as well unexpected falling objects.
Temperature and humidity
Generally, orchids flourish on warm positions with temperatures above 50°F. For most orchids found in local garden centres, temperatures of 50°F to 60°F are usually maintained. Humidity is also of great importance. Summer and spring bring good humidity but in the winter where most homes are heated, orchids may need 60-80 humid levels which may be provided by some artificial humidifiers.
Watering
Once you learn how to take care of orchids you will realize that “over watering” orchids is a common problem. It is hard to judge the correct amount of water needed by the plants at various times. Experts say that orchids require little water than most people know.
Increase watering the plant on summers and decrease during winters. Where available, rainwater is more preferred than tap water. One may also want to consider a “rain shower” type of watering for your garden. Droplets of moisture, which can be likened to rainforests, are good for orchids. Although some species prefer mild drought conditions, it is probably best to hold off your watering and wait as orchids survive.
If in case your orchids are placed in small pots, remember to put holes under them to drain excess water. Roots should not be left soak on too much water.
