How often should orchids be watered? What quantity of water when watering?

I get answers that the reason some of our leaves are falling off is because we water too much.

Some Orchids are happier with more water than others, with some are fully hardy, and growing outside.

The most common indoor potted plant Orchids generally require limited amounts of water, and prefer clean rain water, if you can provide, as tap water’s chemicals can affect them negatively.

As has been mentioned, it’s generally better to wait for the pot to have mostly dried, not so much that it’s biscuit dry all the way through, but moderately dry to touch, and then to immerse it for a few seconds in water.

Generally never let your Orchids stand in water, as this, as well as over-watering, can lead to root rot. I water mine from weekly, to every other week, in this way.

Some of the less tropical Orchids are also good to be stood outside during the summer, and my Cymbidiums and Oncidiums are still outside, and will be brought in before the first frosts. Overall, many of them love high humidity levels, but never stand them in water to achieve this – you can place a saucer with pebbles and some water underneath (just don’t let the roots touch the water), and this increases the surrounding humidity levels well.

Overall, more water is needed during the growing season, and when the bulbous orchids are growing with new shoots, rather than when the plants are more dormant and have well formed pseduo-bulbs.

If you fertilise, use a weak fertiliser, once a month or so during the growing season.

If you’ve got a new plant that’s not too well, it may be because it has been shocked and stressed, whilst transiting from a perfect greenhouse at a nursery, onto a retailer and then to your home. It may also have been watered incorrectly at a retailers, meaning its later growth could be affected – with some perseverance and tailoring your care you will get good results. The easiest Orchids, in my opinion, are the Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchids, and are now pretty much the most commonly sold plants. http://www.sjaakvanschie.nl/images/img_phalaenopsis.gif These are water sensitive, and the general guidance above is good for them.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
