When will my rose bushes bloom?
I planted roses last year. As of now, I live in chicago, there is no growth, absolutely just twigs, when do they start to bloom?
Hi ok you didn’t mention if you mulched the roses over the winter months…and if you did, when you removed the mulch. That being said; roses generally bloom around June. You mentioned that you’re not seeing any growth; this winter was very hard on plants, we had Two, very warm spells followed by Two, hard freezes; when the temperatures reach about Fifty, degrees most plants start to produce what are called “terminal buds”, these contain not only the new leaf growth, but the flower buds as well. Most roses couldn’t take the second freeze. I had Twenty, roses in my bed; I lost all but Four, to the second freeze.
There is one test you can perform to see if your roses are still alive; scratch the stem very gently near the graft union(the base of the plant) if you see green just under the outer “bark” your plant is still alive, if all you see is brown stringy wood, your plant is dead. Although, from what you’re saying it sounds as if your plants are already dead, because you should be seeing some growth by now. Sorry dude.
